designation. Please see
"http://www.brian-hamman.com/ResultsForNicholsSurnameProject.htm" for
links and further details about haplogroups and haplotypes. 23153 was
originally predicted to belong to haplogroup O2, however, he tested negative
for O2 and was later confirmed to belong to haplogroup I; N7441 also confirmed
to be haplogroup I, through the National Genographic project. Looking at the Y-STR haplotype for 23153 and
N7441, it is likely that this Welty clan belongs to the I2b subgroup most commonly found in
Although the first two participants
(19175 and 23153) trace their Welty ancestry back to around 1800 of York
County, PA, these results show that these are two completely separate Welty
lines. A 3rd Welty line
(46885) with ties to another Welty line of York County putatively originating
in Edenkoben, Germany, was also tested and found to be completely different
from the 1st two Welty lines of York County. Finally, a 4th Welty that clearly

different from the other three lines of
Participant #23153 is also the same
line as the famous writer, Eudora Welty.
Although that Welty line matches the Ulrich Welty line (b. 1728) of
