Canadian Armed Forces Jul.25,1941 Halifax, NS to Sep.25,1972 Summerside, PEI - Sgt.; employed for 26 yrs.; WWII overseas; after 1972 was self employed in Nicholsville running a small apple farm; loved hunting and fishing and after retirement enjoyed gardening, woodworking and crossword puzzles.
Ben and Merna were married at the United Baptist Parsonage. Both were christened in 1964 in Bagotville, Que. by the Military chaplin.
From the newspaper: "Quiet but pretty wedding took place at Aylesford United Baptist Parsonage, on Saturday evening, May 8, at 9 o'clock, when Rev.R.S. Gregg, married L.A.C. Bennie Nichols RCAF Leading Aircraftman, s/o Mrs Cowan D. Galbraith, Halifax. Bride gowned in turquoise blue silk crepe, street length, with brown accessories, and a bouquet of snapdragons and fern. She had been a popular clerk in the Kentville Dry goods Store for the past year. Bennie is stationed at Claresholm, Alberta."
After two years of service overseas, the 2nd WW ended and Bennie left the Air Force. He took a course in Sydney, NS and became a licensed mechanic. He worked for Berwick bakery and dairy for a few years making deliveries by truck, then rejoined the Armed Forces in 1952. They lived at Greenwood, Germany from 1959-1963, Bagotville, Que. and then Summerside, PEI. We all experienced many friendships and lasting memories of life in other parts of the world outside of the Annapolis Valley. Sgt. Nichols worked in the Armament section (weapons and bomb dump) in the RCAF and also taught survival to the pilots. He worked with the Boy Scouts of Canada for years. Upon retirement from the Armed Forces, Sgt. Nichols and Merna moved to Nicholsville and bought the Cecile Palmer place on the corner of Jacksonville Road and Palmer Road. Bennie was a fruit inspector and worked his apple farm there. After retiring, they moved to Dempsey Corner on the North Mountain. Notes for George Nichols:
SKETCH: Thanks to Charlotte Vardy, we learn that George Nichols, a loyalist to the crown, became the man of the family at merely 19 yrs. when his father died. He became responsible for his mother as well as numerous siblings. In 1985, Dr. Anderson writes: "The house of Capt. George Nichols is still standing on East Main St., substantially as it was in 1765. Capt. Nichols was one of the magnates of the town, an owner of slaves and the only person who appears in the assessors' list as possessing a wheeled vehicle. His house was the most pretentious in the village. The lodge meetings were held in the ballroom which occupied the upper story of the house."
The first public record of George appeared in the April 20, 1738 Waterbury census by the Town meeting in which George Nichols was enumerated as one of 235 people in the NW quarter of Waterbury, household of six: his mother, himself and 4 younger brothers and sisters. His older brother, James was attending Yale and his father had died in 1733.
We learn further that George and his brother, James, used the considerable influence to have the first highway of their community laid out. In total, George built three houses of which the family is aware: His own mansion, one built for his son, John, and the third for his son, Lemuel. Lemuel's house became the "Tory Hangout" during the Revolutionary War. There is some speculation that Lemuel certainly benefited financially from this arrangement.
George farmed a 100 acre plot near the Park in Waterbury where he also owned a prosperous mill and a store around 1740. He, along with Stephen Upson, Jr., was responsible for choosing a burying ground. The ground chosen became the resting place of George & Susannah Nichols. Charlotte shares information from Gay Nichols-Hydrick, who translated the old English script of his Will, written Sept. 15, 1788 a month before his death in October 1788 and proved Dec. 15, 1788.
" In the name of God amen. this fifteenth day of September in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-Eight.
I, George Nichols of Waterbury, in the County of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, in New England, being advanced in age and labouring under bodily infirmities but of sound and perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God and confirming it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament: That is today principally and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hand of God who gave it hoping in his mercy through the merits of his Son our Lord and Saviour. Any my body, I re-commend to the Earth to be Decently Entered in Christian manner at the Directions of my Executors when it shall please God to take me away not douting but I shall receive the same again by the Almighty Power of God at the General Resurrection.
As to such worldly estate as it soeth please God to Bless me with in this life, I give and disperse of this same in the following manner:
First, my will is that my funeral charges be paid out of my moveable estate and the whole of the remainder of by debts to be paid out of my real estate to be sold and disposed of by my Executors as the Law Directs to pay all my just debts.
Then I give to my Loving Wife Susannah the one half of my now dwelling house that I now possess of with one half of all the privileges belonging to said house with three acres of land adjoining the house with one half of the barn standing on the same for the said Susannah to use and improve and be at her disposal forever.
Furthermore, I give to my loving wife Susannah, the whole of my personal estate except what is taken for the expense of my funeral charges to be at her disposal forever. Furthermore, I give all the remainder of my real estate after my debts are paid to be equally divided among all my children reconing and accounting what they already received (viz.) the heirs of my eldest son, William Nichols, deceased, one equal share with my Daughter Amy, the wife of the Reverend Mr. James Scovil, my sons Lemuel Nichls and John Nichols , and my daughters Pru, the wife of Dr. Daniel Southmayd, and my daughters Susannah and Molly Nichols to be especially divided for quantity and quality so far as to make all equal reckoning and accounting which each one will receive out of my estate.
And I do hereby constitute and appoint my Loving sons Lemuel Nichols and John Nichols, to be my sole executors of this my last will and testament. And I do hereby disallow revoke and disannul all other and former wills testaments legacies and executors by me anywise or at any time willed and made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament."
His signature was said to be in a shaky hand (as what that of his wife, Susannah
Witnessed by Ezra Bronson, Timothy Porter, Simeon Nichols
Proved and approved by Benjamin Baldwin, Clerk. Probate #5966.
George's marriage to Susannah merged two powerful families, both founders of Waterbury. Gay Marsh Hydrick relays that 2 Nichols brothers, George and his younger brother, Richard, married 2 Hickox sisters which resulted in Gay and her husband, Don being related c. 200 years before they met and married. She shares further about the building of his prestigious home, "The tradition still lives that two days were spent in the raising the large frame, that an ox was roasted and unusual festivities attended the occasion." Gay speculated that perhaps our Nichols ancestors were not quite as puritanical as we may have been led to think; that they did love a reason for a party. This writer can state for a fact, that her father, Robert Nichols, and great grandfather, Henry C. Nichols, of NE, Ohio, loved to dance, sing and merry-make!
George & Susannah had 8 children, 4 sons, 4 daughters.
NOTE: Under the Hickox family, Barbour tells us that George, born of Waterbury, was the s/o Joseph Nichols, Jr. (actually Joseph, Sr.) & the Arnold copy names his wife as Susannah Nichols.

Notes for Joseph Nichols:
LINE: ISAAC, ISAAC, FRANCIS FOURTH GENERATION
Microfiche says b. abt.1682 Milford, New Haven, CT; also Nov.1,1680 Stratford. (Could have had a brother named Joseph who d. young.)
Taken by his mother to a home in Milford after his father died. Joseph grew up in the household of his step-father, Daniel Comstock, and under the guardianship of his Uncle Joseph Nichols of Stratford. Joseph of Newtown, upon Long Island "bought land on May 20, 1715 in Derby, Conn. and removed there soon after." He was of Derby 1723 - 1729 then bought in Waterbury, New Haven County, Conn, where he died in 1733. (Humphrey notes)
His children are all mentioned in the Probate records in Waterbury.
According to Charlena Castle, Joseph's gravestone relays, "dyed March 10, 1733 in the 49th year of his age." Further, he was one of the first to be interred in the old Grand Street Cem., which was levelled when the Bronson library was built on that site. Supposedly the 257 oldest stones were stored in the cellar of the building. ( If correct, would make the year of his birth 1686, instead of 1680 as recorded in Stratford.)
Another writeup stated that Joseph, Elizabeth and their children moved to Waterbury in 1728 just before a swell of immigration which began in 1731 and continued for some years. We do not know the reasons Joseph chose Waterbury - but it had become a thriving city and we are aware that Nichols men were industrialists first, farmers second. Joseph established an iron foundry, which became the foundation of the Nichols fortune, and was perhaps a partner in other businesses. When Nova Scotia authorities asked us the source of knowlege which enabled our young Nichols in Nova Scotia after the Revolutionary War to build the first iron foundry in that province, we traced it back to Joseph of Waterbury. (Gay Nichols Hydrick)
"The Town and City of Waterbury, Connecticut, from the Aboriginal Period to the Year Eighteen Hundred and Ninety-Five" edited by Joseph Anderson, D.D. and Anna L. Ward, published in New Haven in 1896, is my best source and I shall quote from it extensively.
Seventeen families of Farmington petitioned the General Court of Hartford for a plantation in a place the Indians called Mattatuck, the date 9 October 1673 - an additional nineteen men signed on at a cost of one hundred pounds each for a total population of some thirty-four families, most of whom are our ancestors through marriage to the Nichols offspring.
On the steep granite slopes washed by the Naugatuck River, they built a town and called it Waterbury; an ideal location for the great manufacturing city it would become, known everywhere as Brass Town.
Yankees poured in from the old coastal towns, businessmen, inventors and engineers to manufacture such things as the Ingersoll pocket watch which became popularly known as "the Waterbury." Clocks, watches, recording instuments, artillery, machinery, iron, steel and chemicals were among the vital products of the city as well as anything which could be made of brass for colonial households.
Alas, Joseph of whom Dr. Anderson said, "Joseph was , I think, the progenitor of all of the name who have lived in Waterbury" followed his father to an early death. He was indeed progenitor of us all in Waterbury, his six sons seeding the place with Nichols children. Joseph IV is dead before age fifty in 1733, five short years after establishing the family home in Waterbury. Twenty-two years of marriage, and eight children later, Elizabeth is alone and as they called it then, "relict of Joseph Nichols" - the children range in age from 2 to 20. Heavens knows how many more she might have had - if Joseph had not died!
Elizabeth is a woman of independent means and spirit and she remains a widow - eight children would have been something of a deterrent to calling suitors. She demonstrates her remarkable Woods heritage and thrives in a future daunting enough to do in most women. If a woman survived childbirth - she could survive anything: fire, pestilence, famine, poverty, or wealth. It is not known when she died.

A deed from Mary's mother to Isaac Nichols, in original Milford land records now (1929) in private hands reads: "Also, Isaac Nichols, Jr., of Stratford conveyed land in Derby, 22 Mar. 1674/5, and called Elizabeth Fowler of Milford his mother-in-law. She was Mary Baldwin's mother, Elizabeth (Alsop)(Baldwin) Fowler."
Isaac Jr. did not live long enough to have much happen to him. He owned a house and land at Stratford in 1686. Before her husband's death, Mary Baldwin Nichols had three living sons, Francis, Richard, and Joseph and was pregnant with one more. Isaac not having left a will, his property was inventoried June 12, 1690 (History of Fairfield says presented May 13,1690 and having died intestte was presented to a special Court held in Fairfield 12 June 1690) ; the widow relict and his brother Josiah Nichols being ordered by the court "to settle the estate and order the children the best they may." She sold out and left Stratford, going home to Milford to her parents.

Inventory taken May 13, 1690, by Samuel Sherman, James Judson, and John Coe, and filed June 12, 1690, page 104.
Stratford saw us no more. It is because of Isaac Jr.'s early death that we are divorced from Stratford and eventually, young Joseph, only about 3 years old when his father died, grows up, marries and establishes the Nichols ancestral home in Waterbury, CT, where it remains to this day. One record states "she moved to Long Island where the boys grew up; Richard returned to Stratford in 1700 and Bridgeport; Francis remained in Long Island and Joseph eventually located to Waterbury, Conn."
Orcutt names only three of his children, probably because Mary sold the homestead, left Stratford and returned to the home of her parents in Milford.
Sometime between the death of Isaac Jr. and 1712 Mary married Daniel Comstock of Lyme, Conn., a widower with two children, Sarah and Ann. Daniel Comstock seems to have died Dec. 25, 1725 leaving a will dated Nov.25, 1725 naming no wife. (assuming Mary had died before 1725). Mary had conveyed with Daniel Nov.22,1711 to "our brother Barnabas Baldwin" land in Milford.

Isaac raised Isaac, a minor son of John Nichols his deceased brother, who was apprenticed to Isaac in 1659 after the death of Richard Perry, step father of young Isaac, in 1658 and called "cousin" Isaac thereafter. (Fairfield Land Rec 1659 p191). John Washburn grandson of Jane (Nichols) & William bequeathed the keeping of the "orphant" John Nichols s/o John, to his wife Mary & father in law Richard Butler, Aug 1658. John Washburn s/o John Washburn of Corberry on Long Island, while he was a minor, did receive of his uncle Isaac Nichols of Stratford, Twenty-Two pounds, One shilling and Eight pence in 1676.(Stratford Land Rec V2:512). Isaac md Margery ( ) and is listed in his will as "wife Margery" (Donald L Jacobus, Hist Fairfield Ct V1:435). His children were born in Stratford (Barbour Collection CT). Isaac died Nov 5 1695 at Stratford Ct. occupation mentioned in will as "Soap Boiler". Will dated 28 Sep 1694, Stratford Fairfield Ct, where Margery is listed as "wife Margery". Isaac was also one of the first settlers, coming from England to Stratford with his father. He was the owner of much real estate, was engaged in a flourishing mercantile business, and was a prominent and substantial citizen of the town. From 1650 to 1680, Jospeh Hawley built vessels at Stratford and also sold foreign cloths, groceries, and other goods, and certain records attest that Isaac Nichols Sr., conducted a like business. He has a homelot of his own next door to his father in Stratford, his house lot running through from Main St. to Elm St., as is now called (1917, Humphrey notes). He was owner of much real estate in Stratford; deputy to the General Court (or Assembly) from Stratford in May 1662 and again in October 1664, and appears to have been a substanial and prominent citizen. (Source: History of Stratford by Wm. Howard Wilcoxson) This is also in History of Stratford by Samuel Orcutt with added note: Isaac was a "soap boiler," as all men had some trade or definite occupation in those days, but in a broad free and fertile country he and his sons became successful farmers, and the descendants are scattered far and wide in the land of freedom and prosperity.
His will was dated Sep.28,1694 , inventoried Sept.1695 and proved Nov.6,1695; wife Margery; son Benjamin; children of dau. Mary Chauncey; dau. Sarah Burritt; children of son Isaac dec'd; children of son Jonathan dec'd; children of son Ephraim; daus. Patience, Temperance, Elizabeth Webb, Margery. He bequeathed his homestead and lands to Benjamin, after the decease of his wife, stating that he had given to all his other children, as he was able, at their marriage or afterwards. (Jacobus)
Margery and Isaac Nichols appeared to have lived happily ever after, for they produced eleven children as was the current custom. These Children Eleven are truly the birth of a nation. They form the web of New England and although I speak of the ones named Nichols, use any name, the story will be the same. They followed various professions but they were all planters, also, to feed their huge families. And while bringing up the next generation, enough to fill another plantation, they were creating a town, a church and a state. We think we are doing well if we set up a business or an entire industry; build a house or a farm or a couple of apartment houses, carry on with a school, a church or a library. These people did all of that and created a nation at the same time.
Records in New England are precise: baptism, marriage and death are church-recorded. The original records of any little colony church - are a fountain of information. The men made elaborate wills. Attached to these wills were inventories down to the last pewter spoon. One can learn exactly how they lived by their possessions. By the third generation - Children Eleven - they were prosperous and soon were building great clapboards replacing the log cabins of the original settlers.
It is to Isaac and his Beza Bible (predating the King James version published in 1611) we owe so much, that precious book which he had brought from England with him and which now is kept in the Putney Museum in Stratford. We can be almost certain that his mother would have given it to him as they set out on their precarious journey across the dark seas of the Atlantic, knowing they were leaving home forever. The giver endorsed it "Isaac Nichols, his Book. God give him Grace therein." The possession of this Bible marks Isaac as a literate man, son of parents who could read, a youngster who would have been in the local village school before leaving England. In this Bible, wife Margery listed the births of her eleven children, ranging in dates from 1647 to 1668. (Gay Nichols Hydrick) Bible dedicated in behalf of the Nichols family in May 2002 in Stratford - 400 yr old book published in Edinburgh by Andro Hart Anno.Dom.1610. It appears that Isaac wrote his own Last Will and Testament on a blank page as well.
In Genealogical Guide to the Settlers of America, Henry Whittemore, 1967, pg.386, "NICHOLS, ISAAC, Stratford,1639, son of Francis, born in England; one of the first settlers. Savage thinks was that sargeant appointed to train the men in militia discipline this year; was representative, 1664: at the October session: had Mary 1648, who married, 1667, Isreal Chauncey, the minister of the town; Sarah, 1649; Josiah 1652; Isaac, 1654; Jonathan 1655; ephraim 1657; Patience 1660; Temperance 1662; Margery 1663; Benjamin 1666; and Elizabeth 1668. He was a soap boiler; had a good estate; made his will 1694. He names wife Margaret and all the children but Josiah who had died. Yet three other sons, Isaac, Jonathan and Ephraim, were also dead, but to their children each a small legacy was directed by that instrument, because each family had been portioned. Sarah married, 1674, Stephen Burritt, and Elizabeth, 1691, Rev. Joseph Webb."
According to Orcutt's History of Derby, "Isaac of Stratford removed to Derby about 1678; but only the record of one marriage and three births are found on the town records." It appears that Isaac must have returned to Stratford some time before his death. Perhaps the majority of the family preferred Stratford society to that of Derby, which would account for so few vital records recorded in Derby. (This Isaac could have been Isaac's nephew, s/o his brother, John.)
FYI: Mr. Thompson, while not a Nichols descendant, has for many years worked with Barbara J. Nichols who authored an April 1993 TAG article proving Sgt. Francis Nichols of Stratford could not be the son of Francis Nicolls and Margaret Bruce ("Francis Nichols of Stratford, Connecticut, Was Not a Brother of Deputy Governor Richard Nicolls of New York.") Barb and I are descended from The Sergeant's son John."

Notes for Margaret Margery:
WHO is Margery?
The surname of Isaac's wife, Margery or Margaret is difficult to ascertain. Evidently there were multiple or very unclear entries in town records. Torrey cites all of the following: Washburn?, Sherman?, Shuman? & Fairchild?
Rose Harnden says Margery was d/o William Washburn and Jane Whitehead but according to Washburn genealogy, William didn't have a dau. Margery. Isaac's sister, Jane m. their son, William. Jane Nichols and William Washburn had a son, John Washburn who made a reference in his will, "Loveing Uncle Isaac of Stratford" - this reference has led the assumption that Isaac was related through his wife Margery - now we know it was through his sister, Jane.
Another theory is that Marjery could be the d/o John Washburn, who was in Plymouth by 1632, her mother, Margaret, emigrated in 1635." In 1646, when Stratford church had only been in existence for seven years, the son of Francis Nichols, Sr., Isaac Nichols, Sr., married Margery Washburn, II, d/o John and Margaret Washburn, I - all of Stratford.
Margery is also referred to as a Sherman - maiden name or she m. Edmund Sherman after Isaac's death. In writeup on Men of Mark in Connecticut about James Nichols b. 1830, it states that Isaac s/o Francis m. d/o Theophilus Sherman of Wethersfield.
Edmund Sherman b.1572 Dedham, England, d. mar.1640/41 New Longdon, CT m. 1598 Joan Makin had dau. b.abt. 1619 (unnamed)-could be Margery.
Data says Isaac m. in 1646 to Margaret Washburn b. 1627 and other data says m. in 1654 to Margery b. 1630; this is either an error or two different women.
Children of Isaac Nichols and Margaret Margery are:
