*Faster mutating markers are shown in red. DYS 19 is also known as DYS 394.
aHg = Haplogroup designation. Please see "http://www.brian-hamman.com/ResultsForNicholsSurnameProject.htm" for links and further details about haplogroups and haplotypes. 23153 was originally predicted to belong to haplogroup O2, however, he tested negative for O2 and was later confirmed to belong to haplogroup I; N7441 also confirmed to be haplogroup I, through the National Genographic project. Looking at the Y-STR haplotype for 23153 and N7441, it is likely that this Welty clan belongs to the I2b subgroup most commonly found in Switzerland. Here is an excellent website on Haplogroup I: http://www.northwestanalysis.net/ Information on other haplogroups can be found at http://www.worldfamilies.net/y-haplogroups.htm
Although the first two participants (19175 and 23153) trace their Welty ancestry back to around 1800 of York County, PA, these results show that these are two completely separate Welty lines. A 3rd Welty line (46885) with ties to another Welty line of York County putatively originating in Edenkoben, Germany, was also tested and found to be completely different from the 1st two Welty lines of York County. Finally, a 4th Welty that clearly traces back to the George Weldy who settled near Dover Twp., York Co., PA, is different from the other three lines of York County!!
Participant #23153 is also the same line as the famous writer, Eudora Welty. Although that Welty line matches the Ulrich Welty line (b. 1728) of Switzerland (participants N7441 and 37601), we currently do not know who is their common Welty ancestor; however, since these two different Welty lines match on 25/25 markers, it is likely that their common Welty ancestor is not further back than a couple of generations past Ulrich Welty. Participants 81597 and 90601 are, like 23153, descendants of Peter Welty, the Immigrant. For more information on this large Welty clan, please see the following website: http://www.rpwelty.com
